Retraction of Lancet Article Linking MMR Vaccine to Autism

On February 2, 2010, the highly reputable British medical journal, Lancet, formally announced the full retraction of their publication of the controversial 1998 Andrew Wakefield article which suggested a link between the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine and autism. This retraction followed the judgment of the United Kingdom General Medical Council (GMC) on January 28, where they found that several elements of the study were false.

The Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties (BPS) is re-evaluating the process for offering subspecialty exams. One of the first things that must be completed is a needs assessment. BPS will move forward on the needs assessment if there is justification to support the development of a seperate exam. A survey has been designed to get a head count of the number of pediatric practitioners who are in the United States that would consider sitting for a Pediatric Board certification exam.
