Types of Manuscripts

EDITORIALS generally provide commentary and analysis regarding an article in the issue in which they appear. They may also provide a perspective on a select topic. Editorials are almost always solicited, but the Editor is willing to discuss editorials that have not been requested.
Example: Kearns; Gal

REVIEW ARTICLES are evidence-based reviews of topics relevant to those practicing in the area of pediatric pharmacology and therapeutics. Reviews are usually unsolicited material, but occasionally a manuscript will be solicited by the Editor. To prevent duplication of a topic, contact the editorial office before writing a review article. Review articles undergo the same peer-review and editorial process as original research and case reports. They should be written for the general practitioner and not for the specialists. Ethical topics, legal concerns, pharmacoecomonic and healthcare policy papers are welcomed.
Examples: D-TEST; Propofol; Eades

CLINICAL INVESTIGATIONS reports involve the results of original research. They include, but are not limited to, clinical studies involving therapeutic outcomes assessment, characterization of pharmacological activity in pediatric patients of various ages, medication administration problems or techniques, administrative and service descriptions, medication stability testing, health care policy, pharmacoeconomic analysis, and ethical and legal issues. Clinical Investigations undergo the same peer-review and editorial process as reviews and case reports.
Example: HAK

THERAPEUTIC DILEMMAS are teaching cases that are based on real or contrived patients. The case is constructed to allow for discussion of an area of therapeutics that is novel or often misunderstood by practitioners. The discussion may be written by the same individual who developed the case or the Editor may identify a recognized expert clinician to provide a discussion of the case. Review articles undergo the same peer-review and editorial process as reviews and case reports. The Editor has discretion as to whether or not these articles will undergo peer-review.
Examples: Kraft; Albuterol

CASE REPORTS are brief reports that describe the medical course for one patient or a series of pediatric patients. Case reports undergo the same peer-review and editorial process as reviews and clinical investigations manuscripts.
Examples: Malik

SPECIAL ARTICLES are generally reviews that address a unique interest of the readership. The Editor has discretion as to whether or not these articles will undergo peer-review.
Example: History of Neonatal Medicine

BIBLIOGRAPHY provides the reader with an annotated list of significant references on a specific topic. A bibliography generally does not include more than 25-30 references. These are almost always solicited, but the Editor is willing to discuss bibliographies that are not solicited.

BOOK/SOFTWARE/GUIDELINE REVIEWS are generally solicited; however, the Editor will consider proposals to review a specific book.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR are brief communications that express an opinion in response to material in a previously published issue of JPPT. Letters may also address issue in health care that impacts pediatric pharmacology and therapeutics, which have not been published in JPPT.
